The owl monkey is one of the most unusual primates of the Americas — and the only truly nocturnal monkey.

Native to Central and South America, owl monkeys are immediately recognizable by their enormous forward-facing eyes. Those eyes are highly adapted to low-light conditions and give the animal its intense, almost hypnotic expression. Unlike many other monkeys, owl monkeys become active after sunset, moving through forest canopies under conditions where vision, hearing and spatial awareness matter more than speed or spectacle.

Their social behavior is just as distinctive. Owl monkeys often live in close family groups, and pair bonds can be unusually strong. Fathers play a major role in caring for infants, frequently carrying the young and returning them to the mother for nursing. That combination of nocturnal life, close family structure and highly developed sensory awareness gives the species a character quite different from the more familiar image of a loud, daytime tropical monkey.
